So 4th of July came and went and it was a pretty great holiday for us. We combined my birthday with the celebration since Dee and I flew out on the 5th so we could be back here and that was...interesting as I try to figure at what age you start denying your age? 31 isn't old I get that but it's... well let's just say I'm in a different place than I thought I'd be at this age.

that said life is pretty quiet. I've got some good students this session who are moving quickly through the material and it seems like they like it a lot. I even had a freshman taking the class for a writing /english credit say that they want to declare a screenwriting major after this. I have to admit that's kind of a cool feeling.

Memorial Day.
Growing up to our family it always meant a bbq or a day at the lake or down at the dunes , depending on the weather (In southern Oregon it's still raining a lot of may). It was a fun day off of school the celebration of the start of summer, you know?

Then things changed. When I joined up...well it wasn't exactly war time and the marines was really a means to an end. A way to pay for the school I wanted to go to without all of us being up to our ears in student loans.

Then September 11th happened and that all changed because hot on the heels of that and what should have been the end of my active duty Iraq happened again and before I knew it..well the Military calls it stop-lossing I'm no sure what I would call it. Let's just say I got more than I bargained for when i signed up and was on active duty for a lot longer than I planned.

I also saw a lot, went through a lot and lost a lot of friends. There were days I was sure I wouldn't make it back home and still can't figure out how or why I did and so many others I served and befriended didn't.

Since then Memorial day has taken on a bigger meaning. It's not that fun start of summer day I used to think of it as. Instead it's a day to remember some good and bad times and the memories of some brave and competent soldiers.
